Walter Hummel, a Pennsylvania veteran, served in the Army National Guard for five years. But recently, like so many Americans, he began facing some significant hardships. A two-year-long struggle to find work made it impossible for him to afford critical home repairs.
One of these was for his roof, perhaps the most expensive replacement. Walter’s roof had developed several leaks and water was running freely into his kitchen. Walter was able to tarp the roof, but this was only a short-term solution to an extremely urgent issue.

In Comes Bachman’s Roofing and Friends
When Bachman’s Roofing was informed about Walter’s struggles, they were pleased to offer more than a hand. Proudly ranking in the top 1% of roofers nationwide, Bachman’s prides itself on its commitment to giving back to its community. Walter was a perfect candidate for these services.
With great urgency, Bachman’s rallied their trusted partners to make this project happen. With the generous contributions of ABC Supply Co. and GAF, who donated necessary materials, Bachman’s was able to provide Walter with a brand-new, high-quality roofing system – at absolutely zero cost to him.

An Important Transformation
This wasn’t just a structural fix – it was life-changing for Walter. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Walter was relieved that his home was once again safe and secure so that he could focus on the important things: the safety and care of his family.
“I just want to thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. I feel very fortunate. The struggle that we’ve been going through, and, in the struggle that we’ve been going through, this means a lot,” Walter said.
How to Help
If you know a veteran in need of costly home repairs, there are many organizations out there that can help. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) can provide disability housing grants to those who have become disabled in their service to our country. They can also provide Home Improvement and Structural Alteration (HISA) Grants for those who, like Walter, need help doing vital repairs on a space they already own.
In the nonprofit sector, Habitat for Humanity offers home repair assistance via its Repair Corps program. Operation Homefront offers financial assistance to all military families for home repairs. Rebuilding Together also provides free home repairs to veterans, especially focusing on those who need accessibility upgrades and safety fixes.
