3 Must-Know Trends for Dog & Cat Parents in 2025

APPA shares the latest and greatest in dog and cat trends for 2025

With more than 68 million dog households and 49 million cat households in the U.S. (according to the American Pet Products Association’s latest data), it’s clear that pets aren’t just a part of the household; they’re a core part of the family. And, when it comes to spoiling our four-legged friends, today’s pet parents are more intentional, informed and trend-savvy than ever.

So, what’s flying off the shelves and into shopping carts in 2025? Here are three pet product trends we’re seeing everywhere right now –– and yes, they’re backed by APPA’s latest data.

Calming Everything

From thunderstorms to everyday anxiety, calming products have officially become pet essentials, especially among Gen Z pet parents. In fact, 78% of Gen Z dog owners and 71% of Gen Z cat owners say they’re giving their pets calming products, according to APPA research. But these products aren’t just trending among the younger generations –– nearly half of Gen X pet parents are also getting on board.

What’s popular:

  • Heartbeat plush toys
  • Long-lasting chews
  • Treats or supplements with ingredients like melatonin and chamomile
  • CBD products
  • Puzzle toys and lick mats to keep pets mentally engaged

If your pet gets anxious with visitors, during travel, or fireworks, consider hopping on this trend for their comfort (and your sanity!).

Mealtime Makeovers with Toppers, Mixers and Broths

Dinner just got a major glow-up. Pet parents are going beyond the bag and mixing things up with add-ons like broths, powders and freeze-dried goodies. These food toppers aren’t just about taste, they often include functional benefits like probiotics, vitamins and more to boost health benefits.

Over the past six years, we’ve seen a 129% jump in dog owners and a 138% increase in cat owners using food toppers or mixers. That’s a lot of upgraded kibble bowls!

Why it’s popular:

  • Helps picky eaters get excited about meals
  • Adds nutrients for skin, coat, digestion, joint support and more
  • Makes mealtime more interactive and fun

Pet food is getting a total makeover, and the pet parents (and pets!) are here for it.

Travel & On-the-Go Gear

The days of leaving pets at home are fading fast. More than half of dog owners now bring their pup along for errands on foot at least once a week. Cat owners are also catching the adventure bug. The use of leashes, collars and harnesses for cats is up more than 50% in the past six years.

Whether it’s a coffee run or a road trip, pet parents prioritize quality time with their pets and, as a result, invest in gear that makes life on the go easier.

Trending must-haves:

  • Collapsible travel bowls
  • Crossbody bags for treats and toys
  • Hands-free leashes for walks and hikes
  • Cat harnesses and carriers designed for mobility

Bonus point for gear that’s functional and cute!

From calming toys to fancy food toppers and travel-friendly pet gear, pet products in 2025 are all about enhancing the bond between pets and their people. Want to level up your pet parenting game? Grab a new product to try in any of these categories, and we can guarantee you’ll be the new it-pet parent on the block!
