Choosing new windows is one of the joys of renovating your home. Windows come in a surprising variety of sizes and shapes, and contemporary windows are more energy-efficient than ever. They keep your energy bills manageable while still letting the sunshine in. Here are a few of the top styles of windows to consider if you’re planning to renovate.
Palladian window style
This style of window is actually three windows. There’s a central arched window and two, usually shorter, rectangular windows on either side. Palladian windows can be challenging to dress, but they are wonderfully elegant and just the thing for larger homes in classical styles such as Adam or Queen Anne.
Bay window style
A bay window is made up of at least three windows set at angles in a recess, or bay. Bay windows can be quite small and compact, or they can take up an entire large wall. Like Palladian windows, they are elegant and can be tricky to dress. A curved bay window is called a bow window.
Picture window style
This window is often seen in modern apartment buildings. It’s a large, fixed window flanked by two smaller windows that can usually be opened. This window is meant to give a wide, pleasing view and is often found at the front of a house to provide a view of the front lawn or the back for a view of the backyard or garden.
Double-hung window style
This perennially popular style of window has two movable sections that are adjusted by weights and pulleys. You open one section by pulling it down from the top and the other by pushing it up from the bottom.
Cathedral window style
Houses that feature rooms with double-height or cathedral ceilings are becoming more and more popular, and this type of window is made for them. Cathedral windows are often so large that they take up much of a wall. They’re angled at the top to follow the slope of the roof.
Sliding window style
This is a more modern style of window that looks good on ranch houses. It’s opened by sliding a section vertically past the other instead of pushing it up or down. Because of this, sliding windows can be enlarged to create sliding glass doors that open to your backyard or patio.
Casement window style
These windows have hinges on the side that allow you to either pull or push it open. Casement windows go well with modern-style homes.
Ranch window style
Named for the ranch homes they are most often found in, these windows are also called strip windows. They’re usually found high up on the wall and may be fixed or have panes that can slide open.
